Founder of Palmer College of Chiropractic
Founded in 1897, Palmer College of Chiropractic is the first and largest chiropractic college in the world with more than 2,200 students across three campuses. The main campus is located in Davenport, Iowa with branch campus in Port Orange, Florida (Florida campus) and San Jose, California (West campus). Palmer College of Chiropractic seeks a visionary, goal-oriented and passionate professional who understands the complexity of a multi-campus institution to serve as its Vice Chancellor for Admissions. Reporting to the Chancellor Dennis Marchiori and located on the main campus in Davenport, the Vice Chancellor of Admissions will oversee all aspects of admission for all three campuses. Serving on the Chancellor’s executive leadership team, the new Vice Chancellor of Admissions will work collaboratively with key partners at the college and supervise and inspire a young, talented and hard-working team of 27 full-time admission professionals, including those located on the Florida and West campuses.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The primary duties and responsibilities of the Vice Chancellor for Admission are as follows:
- Design, implement and oversee the execution of a holistic recruitment plan that ensures enrollment growth.
- Create well-defined and measurable goals and continually frame staff work and projects within the context of Palmer’s strategic priorities and guiding principles.
- Provide a strategic view of the national landscape and forecast trends in higher education, especially as they relate to graduate and chiropractic education.
- Provide leadership, oversight, and direction to admission staff members with an openness, appreciation and transparency that allows them to feel inspired, mentored and motivated.
- Participate and encourage staff involvement in professional organizations and professional development activities to ensure admission practices are contemporary.
- Understand and navigate the complexity and nuances of a multi-campus college, appreciating the differences in regions, academic offerings, and student populations.
- In conjunction with Dr. Kevin Cunningham, Vice Chancellor for Student Services, refine the college’s scholarship matrix and strategies for the optimum utilization of college funds to maximize student scholarships, net tuition revenue and student yield.
- Partner with the Vice Chancellor of Marketing to influence strategic marketing and admissions processes to grow the prospective student funnel, and increase the size of the applicant pool.
- Strengthen and enhance relationships with key colleges and universities whose students have matriculated to Palmer in the past, while seeking additional institutions to grow prospective student interest.
- Foster the College’s impressive alumni body’s interest in student referrals, making sure to connect efficiently and deeply with that network.
Qualifications and Characteristics:
The successful candidate should have significant proven experience in an admission
management position in higher education. An undergraduate degree is required, an advanced degree is highly preferred. In addition, candidates for this position should demonstrate the following characteristics, skills, abilities and understanding:
- Track record of success in the field of admission; experience and knowledge of innovative ways to further the College’s enrollment growth goals.
- Strong ability to use enrollment trend data in establishing priorities and developing strategies and objectives.
- Outstanding writing and superior spoken communication skills; appreciation for and ability to effectively articulate, educate and communicate the distinctive features of chiropractic education to prospective students and families.
- Advanced understanding of modern student recruitment strategies and the use of technology, especially as it relates to systems integration; prior use of Salesforce for data management and analysis preferred.
- Superior analytical skills including the ability to evaluate and utilize data and predictive modeling in planning and decision-making, as well as an interpersonal style that enables the sharing of that expert knowledge with the college community.
- Appreciation for an impassioned and connected alumni body; understanding of the integral relationship between alumni relations and admissions.
- Ability to engage and collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and other constituents across a complex, multi-campus structure.
- Demonstrated experience and commitment to recruiting students from diverse and varied backgrounds.

D.D. Palmer, the founder of Palmer College of Chiropractic, is known as the “The Discoverer” of chiropractic and “The Founder” of the profession. D.D Palmer’s son and early student, Bartlett Joshua (B.J.) Palmer, incorporated the school and changed the name to Palmer School of Chiropractic, which was chartered in 1907. B.J. headed the school from 1906 until his death in 1961. At that time, the Palmer presidency was passed onto his son, David Daniel Palmer. Under his leadership, the Palmer School of Chiropractic was renamed the Palmer College of Chiropractic and was designated a non-profit institution. It was accredited by the Council of Chiropractic Education in 1979 and by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1984.
A Palmer College of Chiropractic education is unique in chiropractic because it is thorough and focuses on all three aspects of chiropractic: science, philosophy and art. Rather than focusing on just one area, Palmer College trains students in the philosophical foundations of chiropractic, the science behind it, and the art of adjusting. Palmer offers a Doctor of Chiropractic Program, as well as a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in General Science completion degree on the Davenport campus. Palmer also provides post-doctoral training in areas such as orthopedic, pediatrics, family practice, chiropractic and sports injury rehabilitation, neurology, radiology and nutrition.
The Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) curriculum blends theory with hands-on clinical skills designed to prepare students for success in a professional practice. Students will take courses in the basic sciences, clinical sciences, chiropractic technique, chiropractic philosophy, and business management. After learning the basics, students will also care for patients in the Palmer College Clinic System under the supervision of a licensed doctor of chiropractic. The D.C. curriculum is offered throughout the calendar year, which allows students to complete the program in just three and one-third years.
Palmer’s Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in General Science completion degree provides students with a solid foundation for a successful chiropractic career. Designed to complement the Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) coursework and prepare students for the workplace as a future health-care professional, the B.S. completion degree saves time and money because 30 credits from the D.C. program also apply to the B.S. degree. Students enroll simultaneously in the B.S. and D.C. programs and study under many of the same professors as D.C. students. The curriculum includes courses in natural/physical sciences, business, communications, psychology, mathematics and social sciences/humanities. These studies complement the Doctor of Chiropractic Program curriculum and courses are offered at convenient times to accommodate students who obtain both degrees simultaneously.
The curriculum focuses on hands on learning experiences and promotes close relationships with faculty members. Group activities, labs, simulated patient experience, lecture and patience-scenario discussions are a regular part of the learning experience. In addition, students can take part in research under leading chiropractic scientists through the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR), the largest chiropractic research center in the United States. At Palmer, one can find excellence in teaching and real-world preparation from instructors that are distinguished practitioners, authors, advocates, and researchers in the chiropractic profession. Many continue to work in private practice and connect their classroom instruction directly to personal, real-life experiences.
The Palmer faculty is a group of experienced, highly educated and credentialed men and women dedicated to providing the best possible chiropractic education to their students. Among their ranks are a number of highly published scholars and researchers who have presented their work at prestigious national and international conferences and have written textbooks in use at chiropractic colleges. They serve not only as teachers, but also as mentors who guide students through the chiropractic education process and infuse them with excitement for their chosen profession. The student-to-faculty ratio is 15-to-1 or lower, depending on the particular Palmer campus.
Students attending the Palmer campuses are a diverse group from many different backgrounds, including about 10 percent who come to Palmer from outside the United States. Their average age is 26 years old at matriculation, but students range in age from early 20s to those in their 60s. Many have a scientific background, but others come to Palmer from careers as varied as teaching and agricultural business. To enhance the academic experience in the classroom, Palmer offers over 75 organizations for its students including intramural sports, academic associations and community outreach. Of the more than 60,000 licensed chiropractors in the United States, nearly a third are Palmer graduates; they comprise the largest chiropractic network in the world. In addition, the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research, headquartered on Palmer College of Chiropractic’s campus in Davenport, Iowa, is the most highly-funded chiropractic research center in the U.S. Within the past 10 years, the PCCR has been awarded grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration and the Department of Defense, in addition to private foundation grants. Since 2000, these grants have totaled more than $35 million.
Palmer College of Chiropractic’s Florida campus is situated in Port Orange, Florida, a welcoming city of about 60,000. Its modern campus provides a unique learning experience in a beautiful, coastal setting.
